Wyatt in Juneau
A Daily Photo Essay of My Journey

You may not find this as fascinating as I do but pictured above is a wind-fallen tree. Because of the excessive rain Juneau gets, tree-roots don't reach very deep into the ground. When they get tall and top-heavy, a good wind can blow them over in a way that the roots will tip out of the ground into a vertical wall. The root-system above is between 25 and 30 feet tall. Over successive years, new plants will colonize these roots and a small eco-system forms. My friend Mike helped me find this nice example.
