Mid-winter discoveries can be interesting. A beaver found its way to the base of this tree. I suspect it was trying to make it fall over the mouth of a near-by creek. A beaver's life can't be easy. I've heard that the skeletons of beaver have been found under trees. Presumably they had accidentally brought the trees down upon themselves.
