  Brazil

Wyatt in Rio de Janeiro
A Daily Photo Essay of My Journey

Brazilians take their football (soccer) seriously. While in Rio, I took the opportunity to go to a major soccer competition in the world largest stadium. They estimated that there were about 100,000 people at this game. The stadium holds 130,000. For survival, I had to cheer for a team named Vasco. I was in their section. When the opposing team scored, the fans around me were dead quiet and I saw several men crying. The cheers and banners were fascinating. Some of the banners were giant pieces of fabric that would quickly be unleashed in one swoop covering 10,000 people then retract just as quickly. There was plenty of security keeping problems to a minimum. Apparently they didn't care if people had fireworks...some sounded like bombs and many were little more than giant spitting torches. I didn't get to see much of the game because I was having too much fun people watching but it was a great evening.
