Wyatt in Caracas
A Daily Photo Essay of My Journey

Caracas has sidewalk issues. There are sidewalks were nobody ever walks. There are missing sidewalks in places everyone walks. There are stretches of sidewalks that lead nowhere. There are narrow sidewalks along busy streets and wide sidewalks in quiet neighborhoods. Some sidewalks have deep holes randomly strewn along them. Then there are the sidewalks that the trees are reclaiming. On my way to work each day I have to decide whether it would be better to risk being run over by a fast moving car in the street or twist my ankle on this nice little stretch of concrete.

After this page was posted, I received the following email from my friend Harriet who lives in Juneau:

"I LOVE the sidewalks of Caracas!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Every leaf that settles in through the cracks and every chunk of upturning
concrete carries the flavor of a perfect yet unperfect creation! I like
looking at that scene and could ponder it for a long time.

I recall having walked similar sidewalks all of my life. The photo
inspired me to relive some of the feelings in my life that such a scene
reminds me of. When I was young, such uncared for sidewalks seemed rather
scary. I could only imagine what kind of broken buildings would wait at
the end of this path to danger?!  When I got a little older, the chips in
sidewalks were a bother because they slowed me down...tripped me up. But
today, I think if I could experience that tree and its sidewalk, I would
definitely take the time to capture it up in my memory and fill my senses,
my heart and my mind with warmth and smells of the day.

I hope you chose to walk the sidewalk!" - Harriet C.
