Yesterday a co-worker handed me these odd little packages. "You'll like
them," she said, "They're called tamarand." Apparently they
are a tropical fruit most commonly found in the Sudan and
India but also sometimes found in Venezuela and other nearby
countries. She went on to explain that you take off the
outer layer and suck on the inside. Peeling off the crisp
shell of the pod, I found the inside to have a texture
similar to a dried apricot. I then put the innards into my
mouth and began to suck. Citric was the first powerful taste
I found but then slowly I started experiencing a second
taste that I can only describe as being slightly like a
dried, greasy, fish carcass. I guess there are tropical
fruits I don't like. |
