Every town in Venezuela has
a Plaza Bolivar dedicated to the life of Latin America's
greatest liberator. The plaza in Caracas, which sits across
from the governor's mansion, is especially celebrated
because of the city's status as capital. Simon Bolivar is
actually entombed about a half mile north of the plaza.
There is a monument to Bolivar that sits in the center of
the plaza and is guarded by traditionally-dressed soldiers.
The changing of the guards each hour is full of much
pomp-and-circumstance and was fun to watch. I imagine that
that is the only enjoyable part of this job. Standing still
for long periods of time watching visitors stroll by is not
my idea of enjoyment. In fact, I saw one guard ask a
civilian what time it was and also asked him to adjust his
uncomfortable chin strap. |
