A Daily Photo Essay of My Journey

Pao de Açúcar (a.k.a. Sugarloaf) is one of many impressive rock formations that jet straight up in the Rio area. The thing that makes this one special is that it is right on the coast and is very tall. It also has a cable car, built in 1912, that goes to the top in two stages. The first stage stops on Morro da Urca (a small mountain) at a height of 720 feet. The next stage takes visitors to the top of Pao de Açúcar at an astonishing height of 2,460 feet. There really isn't much on top except for a spectacular view of Rio and the surrounding area. Interestingly, Sugarloaf sits above Rio Harbor which Life Magazine has classified as one of the 7 natural wonders of the world because of its size and depth.
