Don't get the wrong impression that Margarita Island is always sun and surf. Seems like the island is getting more than its share of heavy rains long after the rainy season was to end. Patty and I got caught a few times in heavy downpours.  In one particularly interesting incident, we found ourselves in a little open-air tourist shop for over a half hour while a heavy rain pounded the roof. Ironically we could not buy anything because the shop owner was caught in another shop. We finally gave up on waiting for it to stop and walked about a half mile back to the hotel, getting thoroughly soaked along the way. Of course, the rain stopped as soon as we got to our hotel room.
