Walking home from school yesterday I spotted a little remnant of last summer. These cones grow on the alder trees and are about the size of a small grape. They begin as hard, green bulbs and as the summer progresses they turn into these little cones. In this stage, they look exactly like miniature pinecones. I've seen jewelry made with these cones dipped in gold. Incidentally, in the green bulb stage, they are excellent for hucking at friends.
